Gateway is a series of sculptures made with flashcards and binder rings. They take the shapes of a ladder, a rope, or climbing bars—tools for climbing up towards a higher place. The words on these cards don't necessarily form coherent meanings with each other, reflecting how they may not carry significant implications for the learner individually. Instead, the collection of these words suggests a cultural significance. In Taiwan, mastering these words transcends a mere academic pursuit in English proficiency; it becomes a pivotal stepping stone in one's professional and social standing. The vocabulary on these cards is drawn from what is considered 'essential' in the GRE exam, a commonly required English proficiency test for American graduate school applications. For many immigrants in the U.S., these words symbolize the gateway to the American dream. This series embodies the power of language in supporting one’s ascent to a higher social status. The specific choice of words highlights the dominant role of English among other languages, echoing the prominent position of the U.S. in global migration. Appearing on the wall as a dysfunctional tool, it invokes concerns of this social structure and possibilities of resistance.
