Review by Rika Hiro, “18th Street Art Center 2020-2021 Catalogue,” 2023 Press Release Brooklyn-based, Taiwan-born artist Jennifer Chia-ling Ho (何珈寧) explores the power and limitation of language, presentation, and research methodology. Her work responds to her experience of geographical and cultural displacement as she integrates into US society and encounters the textual history built in the Western context. While in residence at 18th Street, Ho considered how identity is discussed through language. Living in the US for the past three years, Ho has been constantly reminded of her identity as a Taiwanese, a foreigner, and a nonnative because of her inability to speak ‘perfect’ English and her ‘foreign’ accent. The title of the exhibition, ‘How are you?’ is one of the first sentences taught to non-English speakers. However, in a racially conscious society, the production and pronunciation of this sentence weighs much more heavily than the meaning of this casual greeting. This exhibition features Ho’s new work created at 18th Street: Check the Box, an installation of five sculptures -- representing i, u, y, ə, and a, the five vowel-like sounds used in Mandarin Chinese. This exhibition explores the sense of belonging, nationality, and the complex and sometimes conflicted experience of immigrants. Throughout my school years, I studied English both at school and at various after-school English classes. One of the most common activities in these classes was practicing conversations from textbooks with classmates in order to enhance our speaking skills. To reinterpret this experience, I invited my friends with bilingual or immigrant backgrounds to record themselves reading conversations sourced from English learning materials. The speakers were instructed to read only one side of the conversation and to speak slowly like reading from a textbook. Within individual recordings, the speakers conversed with themselves. However, when these recordings are composed together, they spoke, yet no meaningful communication occurred. This project delves into the challenges of living in a foreign country where one cannot speak and communicate in their mother tongue, exploring the subsequent sense of alienation and displacement from language. In Taiwan, English education follows a highly structured and standardized approach, aiming for proficiency in Standard American English without any accents. Deconstructing these conversations serves as a means to liberate from the constraints and control of this learning experience, challenging the concept of 'perfect English.' Each speaker proceeds at their own pace; there is no synchronization or timely response among them. The recordings also capture moments of stumbling, repetition, and self-correction. The simplicity of the space will allow the shelves to become the sole physical structure of the installation. The viewers can walk around but also in-between the individual shelves as they navigate themselves in different literary references. They might need to tiptoe or crouch down to read the text on plexiglass. The shelves from On Display will be installed in the center of the space and different panels will be stacked on the floor leaning against the shelves or against the wall. The stacked panels ask the viewers to think about the relationship between different panels, how their ideologies overlap or how they contradict each other. These panels have the same sizes as the ones on the shelves. They could be on the shelves but instead they are left on the floor. By showing them along with the shelves, I ask the viewers to rethink what references are appropriate to apply and what ideologies we want to accept.
